Obituary

Sarah Glover Osgood loved to travel. On December 7, 2022, she made her final journey to join Don, her beloved husband of 60 years, in heaven. Sarah would have been 100 years old in February. She was born on Feb. 8th, 1923, in Canton, Georgia where she graduated from Canton High School and then attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. At Wesleyan she met her future husband, a handsome Army Lieutenant, Don Osgood, just before he was deployed to serve in WWII. They continued their relationship through letters which Sarah kept her entire life.
After graduating from Wesleyan, Sarah supported the war effort by working for the Signal Corps in Washington, D.C. When Don returned from the war, Don and Sarah married and eventually settled in Jacksonville, Florida where they made their home for over 50 years.
Don was an insurance executive. In the 1950s, it was taken for granted that his wife would be a homemaker, but Sarah had other ideas. In an era where the field was almost exclusively male, Sarah decided to go into Real Estate and became a trailblazer for women in the industry. After many refusals, she found a broker who agreed to sponsor her for the Real Estate exam, but he would not hire her because she was a woman, and he would not have a woman in his firm. After she passed her exam Sarah was turned down by many firms because she was female. Undaunted, she joined a tiny firm and sold $600,000 worth of Real Estate in her first 10 months. When she got her Broker's license, she started her own firm. Very soon, "For Sale by Sarah" signs could be seen all over town. She won many awards, including an award from the New York Times in 1968 for the best advertising of any realtor in Florida. She was also very community minded and volunteered for several causes. Among her many accolades was the "Volunteer of the Year" award from the American Lung Association.
Sarah had two daughters, Nancy and Barbara, but she and Don considered nieces, nephews, cousins and dozens of neighborhood children as a part of their family. In her later years she was a devoted grandmother to her grandson, Jonathan, who she delighted in taking on great trips all over the country. She was also blessed to attend Jonathan's wedding to Margie Matthai and was able to meet her great-grandchildren, Emmy Jean and Elliott.
Sarah is survived by her two daughters, Nancy Osgood and Barbara Osgood-Cox; son-in-law, Bruce Cox; grandson, Jonathan Cox; daughter-in-law, Margie Matthai-Cox; great-granddaughter, Emerson Jean Cox and great-grandson, Elliott Cox. She is also survived by nieces and nephews: Grier Glover, Lisa Standing, Judy Beck, Scott Glover, Susan Rowell-Bundy, Shirley Osgood, Pam Osgood and their spouses and children.
Sarah experienced a life well-lived… full of love, devotion, adventure and happiness. She was truly a pioneer, and her positive attitude was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. Her life proved her favorite motto, "age is only a number." No matter the obstacle or challenge, she never gave up on anyone or anything. She was one of a kind and will be missed by all.
