Lisa Carol Brian, 66, passed away on July 16, 2023 at the Mann House in Cumming, Georgia, after a long illness. Lisa had lived in the Atlanta area since relocating there in 1973. Mentally handicapped since birth, Lisa relied on family, friends, and assisted living facilities for help and support during her life.
Lisa was born on March 20, 1957 on a military base in Clovis, New Mexico. Her father was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, and her mother was a registered nurse. The family lived in New Mexico, Alabama, North Carolina, Texas, California, Hawaii, and Florida before moving to Georgia after her father retired from the Air Force in 1973.
Lisa attended special needs schools as a child and was able to work as an adult despite her disability, spending 20 years with Kroger as a courtesy clerk, bagging groceries, before retiring in 2006.
She was known for being a very friendly and outgoing individual, and always had a smile for anyone she met. At work, she might get in trouble for hugging too many customers.
She loved nothing more than spending time with family and friends (with the only stipulation being that it could not impose on her regular 8:00 pm bedtime). Family reunions were highlights in her life. She was particularly close to her mother, who cared for her after Lisa's father passed away in 1974.
Lisa is preceded in death by her father, Maj. Hubert Murrel Brian, Jr. (ret.), originally from Ethridge, Tennessee, her mother, Esta Higgins Brian Gattis, originally from Coldwater, Alabama, and her sister, Nancy Jane Brian Walens. She is survived by her brother, David Murrel Brian of Milton, Georgia, his wife Marne, brother-in-law Gary Walens of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, aunts and uncles including Wiley Thomas Higgins, Jr. and Helen Higgins of Cumming, Georgia and Ann Kathryn Brian Scott of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and six nieces and nephews.
Lisa will be buried with her parents at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia at 11:00AM Friday August 11, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Just People, Inc.
The staff of Darby Funeral Home is honored to serve the Brian Family.
