Donald Carnes, age 72 of Canton, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020. Born in Forsyth County on February 16, 1947, Donald grew up in Cherokee County and lived most of his life in the Buffington community. A husband, father and grandfather, Donald was a member of Hightower Baptist Church and the Hickory Flat Masonic Lodge. Retired from the poultry industry, he enjoyed UGA football along with a favorable round of golf. Survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Carol Holtzclaw Carnes, Donald was preceded in death by his father, Tyson Carnes. Additional survivors include his sons Brian (Pam) Carnes and Lance (Tonya) Carnes and daughter Whitney Carnes, grandchildren Sarah (Brody) Klett, Rebekah Carnes, Will and Owen Carnes. Blessed with a large family, Donald is also survived by his parents Robert and Wilma Burruss, brothers Doug (Patty) Carnes and Jackie (Pat) Carnes, sister Robin (Mitch) Mitchell, father-in-law W.J. Holtzclaw, sister-in-law Kathryn Holtzclaw as well as many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Darby Funeral Home on Monday, February 3, from 11 AM – 8 PM and on Tuesday, February 4, from 11 AM – 1 PM with the service to follow at 2 PM at Hightower Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Hightower Baptist Church Cemetery. Reverend Geral Richards and Reverend Ronnie McCormick will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jason Brock, Jut Carnes, Ty Carnes, Jut Castleberry, Jeff McCullough, Lee Mitchell and Joey Stewart. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Donald’s memory to Cherokee County Special Olympics, 400 Arnold Mill Road, Woodstock, GA 30188.
