Faith Marcell Davis Hintze was born to Thomas Marshall Davis and Eleanor Nunn Davis Hyde on June 2,
1935. She was born in Buffalo, New York at Filmore Hospital.
Her life has been quite a journey! When she was born, the doctor said to her Daddy, "You have a
beautiful baby girl, but there is a problem. She is very tongue-tied to such a degree she will never talk!
Her father signed medical papers immediately to clip her tongue. He laughed during Faith's childhood
saying he never dreamed she would talk non-stop. Even though the doctors said she would never talk,
God gave Faith a voice. She was thankful that God gave her such a great gift to communicate.
After Faith and her brother were born, her mother decided she would leave their father and take the two
children back to her home in London England. WWII broke out. The children were going to be returned to
the U.S., but Byron broke out with chicken pox. In May 1939, with dog tags around her neck, Faith was
put on the ship Britannica, to travel the two week voyage alone to Ellis Island. She had her fourth birthday
on the ship. Faith landed at Ellis Island, but had to be quarantined because she had chicken pox.
Eventually, she was returned to her father and his family.
Faith lived with her beloved grandparents, Sallie Emma Stratford Davis and Harvey Davis (better known
as Mama and Papa) in Cottonton, Alabama (near Eufala, Alabama) Faith loved living with her
grandparents and was very happy there. Her paternal grandparents lived in an 1800's home. This home
sat on stilts, was heated by fireplaces in every room, kerosene lamps for light, a well for water, a cold
spring for refrigeration, and an outhouse. The kitchen was separate from the main house in case of a fire.
There was so much love and storytelling in this wonderful place. On winter nights, Faith and her
grandparents sat in front of the fireplace with a glass of buttermilk, crumbled cornbread, and a spoon.
Faith's grandparents were Southern Baptist and Primitive Baptist. Her Mama talked a lot about Jesus and
taught Faith how she should live her life. She talked with her how to choose happiness rather than
sadness…to look for the good and not the bad in every person. Her Mama sang old gospel songs and
talked about Heaven. This is where Faith learned about God at age 4 and asked Jesus to come into her
heart and to lead her. Her Grandmother was Faith's inspiration.
Faith's father remarried and brought Faith to Columbus, Georgia. She still saw her grandparents on the
weekends, but life with the stepmother was very difficult.
Faith graduated from Jerdon High School in Columbus, Georgia. She started working with Southern Bell
Telephone Company when she was 14 years old. While living in Columbus, Georgia, she met her future
husband, Dale Duane Hintze, a military policeman at Fort Benning. They were married on December 9,
1954. After their marriage, Faith and Dale moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Dale's family lived.
In the course of time, they had three children- Karla, Kurt, and Daniel. With Dale's job as an Industrial
Engineer, the family moved around the U.S…Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Caseyville, Illinois; Belleville,
Illinois; San Antonio, Texas; Seattle, Washington; Issaquah, Washington; Marietta, Georgia; Thomasville,
Georgia, and eventually back to Marietta, Georgia. When they returned to Marietta, Dale left his job as an
Industrial Engineer. The two opened their own business where beautiful solid wood furniture was built and
wooden decorative items were sold. Eventually, Faith and Dale closed the shop so they could retire and
enjoy time travelling, gardening, and family.
Faith and Dale were members of Faith Lutheran Church in Marietta, Georgia. They were involved in small
group Bible Study with friends from Faith. Faith hosted Christmas teas and get togethers for the ladies at
Faith Lutheran. After Dale passed, Faith went to church at First Baptist of Woodstock. She became
involved with different ministries there…the Widows group, the Seniors Gospel Singers, Russian orphans,
etc. She also attended Shallowford Baptist Church. Besides being involved with church, Faith also
worked several terms at the Governor's Mansion with Governor Deal and Governor Sonny Perdue.
Faith loved people. God gave her the ability to reach out to people on a daily basis. She never met a
stranger. Faith was a story-teller and loved to dance. She was a woman of determination, another gift
from God.
Faith is survived by three children- Karla Hintze Kraft and her husband Mark, Kurt Davis Hintze and his
wife Sara, and Daniel Dale Hintze; five granddaughters- Justyn Hintze, Kayla-Danielle Kraft Murphy and
her husband James, Taylor Hintze, Emma Hintze, Jaime Hintze, and one great granddaughter- Mila
Murphy.
