Lourdes Minerva Serrano

October 10, 1947 - June 2, 2022

Lourdes Minerva Serrano Segarra passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2022, after a long battle of metastatic gall bladder cancer. Lourdes was the proud mother of 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Lourdes’ greatest love was her family. Her children were proud to call her mom, while her grandchildren adored their Mima. The daughter of Rafael Luis Serrano Velez and Angela Elisa Segarra Maldonado was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico and was 74 years old. She was legally blind since birth. Growing up she didn’t allow her eyesight to stop her from being independent and being part of her community. She made lifelong friends and was loved by all. She left Puerto Rico as an Army wife where she lived in a few different states and Germany throughout her 20 years as a military wife. During that time, she successfully raised 3 children, learned a new language, and navigated a new life with many unknowns with pure moxie. Lourdes was an exceptional mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. She cared deeply for her family and friends. She always provided support and love for her family. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was a compassionate spirit whose passion was caring for her family. Lourdes would always say that her children and grandchildren were the best part of her life. A loving mother and homemaker, Lourdes was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, most especially over the holidays. A perfect day for her was having her loved ones under one roof, eating good food, playing cards or Parcheesi while laughing together. Lourdes loved children, which was a large part of why she thrived as a daycare provider. She was known as the baby whisperer. Helping young people laugh and create memories was a true joy in her life. It would be wrong to say that Lourdes lost her battle because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was, she was always determined. When anyone else would have broken, Lourdes stayed strong. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. There was no quit in Lourdes. Just because she is no longer here, it doesn’t mean she lost her fight. Her family grieves her loss, but they take comfort knowing that she is together again with Abuelo, Abuela, Titi Chiqui, and Alla. Lourdes is survived by her daughter Lourdes Maria and her husband Michael, son Cesar and daughter Lisa Marie and her 6 grandchildren: Karolina, Michael, Matthew, Amilia, Giovanny, and Jordan. As well as her brother Rafi Serrano and sister Ivonne Mascaro. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her last days. For those who have known Lourdes in her fruitful journey with us, her graveside service will be held in October in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Plans of the service will be shared at a future date.
