Anita Avery, age 85, of Canton, GA, died on January 30, 2010 after an extended illness. She was born in Danville, VA to the late Baxter and Annie Ferrell. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William N. Cotter and sister Ann Worley. Survivors include her husband of 49 yrs Laurence V. Avery, daughters Susan Cotter Kimbrough (Ken), Marietta, GA, Carolyn Mankowski, Kennesaw, GA, and son Phillip A. Avery (Lynn), Bemidji MN, grandchildren Bill and Tim Milligan, Layne Mankowski Lindemann, Mark , J.T., and Bitsy Mankowski, Chris Nelson, Amanda Kimbrough, and six great-grandchildren. After graduating from high school Anita worked for the FBI which took her to California where she married and had a family. She lived in the San Francisco area until moving to Flat Rock NC when Larry retired in 1993. During her years in California she was active with several golf clubs, was an avid skier in the California mountains, used her expert tailoring skills as a volunteer for the Santa Clara Assistance League Costume Bank, played banjo with the Peninsula Banjo Band, traveled world-wide with a learn & travel program, and became a prolific oil painter. Once settled in Flat Rock, North Carolina Anita joined the Crooked Creek Women's Golf Club making many new friends and continued working on the family genealogy and her art. Anita was also a talented writer producing many wonderful stories of her life's experiences for her family's enjoyment. A private family service is planned for a later date at Connelly Methodist Church, Milton NC, where she will rest next to her beloved maternal grandmother.
