Obituary

Barbara Jean Murphy was born to Ralph and Elsie (Ingersol) Murphy on February 24, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan. She died on Sunday, September 24, 2023 in Marietta, Georgia at Grace Living PCH at the age of 87. She was under the care of Agape Hospice.

While she was very young, her family moved to Sparta, Michigan, where she attended White School, a one-room schoolhouse across the street from her home on 12 Mile Rd. She graduated from Sparta High School in 1953 and headed off to Asbury College, in Wilmore Kentucky. She met George Morris her freshman year and they were married September 1, 1956. They shared 65 wonderful years of marriage, until George's death in November, 2021.

George's ministry took their family around the country – they served churches in Mississippi, Kentucky, Wisconsin and Illinois; they lived in Nashville, Tennessee, and in Atlanta, Georgia. They retired to Canton, Georgia in 1998.

George's work with World Methodist Evangelism introduced them to cultures and people around the globe. Barbara took beautiful photos and carefully documented their trips to Korea, Ireland, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Latvia, Estonia, Germany, Sweden and Norway, England, Brazil, Cuba, Israel and the Holy Land.

While she loved to travel, Barbara was happiest at home (wherever home was). While George "globe trotted," Barbara created a warm, gracious and beautiful space for their growing family. She was an attentive and loving mother, a capable business manager, a marvelous cook, an accomplished seamstress, a quilting hobbyist, an avid reader, interested collector and family historian. She was active in P.E.O and numerous United Methodist congregations. Although she was quiet and naturally reserved, she was a faithful friend who loved to laugh and play Scrabble on Sunday nights.

Barbara is survived by her brother, Jerold Murphy of Ohio; her four children: Tonya Arnesen (David), David Morris (Kathy), George Ewing, Jr. (Amy) and Seren Morris. She has four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a beloved kitty "Meowy." She was preceded in death by her dear husband, George; her brother Carlton and sister Marilyn.

A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.

Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
"Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all."
(Proverbs 31:10-12, 28-29)
