Dr. Carl C. Edge, Jr.'s Obituary

Dr. Carl Carter Edge, Jr. was born in Canton on March 15, 1929 to Carl Carter Edge, Sr. and Elsie Marie Westbrook Edge. He graduated from Canton High School in 1946, but not before attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Emory at Oxford before transferring to UGA, where he met his future bride, Anna Jean Hightower. "Anne". In 1950, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.
He and Anne were married that summer. He enlisted in the Air Force as an airman, graduated from OCS. While in the Air Force he worked in the cutting technology of microwave communications. His adventures carried him from Texas and Michigan to France and Germany. After an honorable discharge in 1955, he returned to Canton unsure of what his next step would be to support his wife and three children. The famous bedspread factory fire in downtown Canton in 1955 (where Carl was employed) forced him to make a life-altering decision. The following September found him in the freshman class of Emory University School of Dentistry. Anne's support as a school teacher and his part-time jobs, ranging from newspaper deliverer to orderly in the ER at Grady Hospital, got them through those tough years. As the newest dentist in Cherokee County (there were only two others at the time) Dr. Edge was instrumental in the fluoridation of Canton's water supply. He was very active in the dental community, as well. He was past president of the North Western District of the Georgia Dental Association and the Southern Academy of Oral Surgery. He valued continual education for dentists long before it became a requirement. As a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, he had reached the highest level of education available for a general dentist. Dr. Edge retired from practice in 1994.
A world traveler, he and Anne have visited every continent on Earth... including two educational cruises to the Antarctic. Dr. Edge is survived by his sister, Sue Edge Taylor; three children, Martha Edge (Rocky) Huffman, Cynthia Edge (Harry Jr.) Zagger, and Carl Carter (Lizzette) Edge III; six grandchildren: Darah Joanna Huffman, Anna Huffman Park, Harry Manuel Zagger III, Leanna Zagger Williams, Carl Carter Edge IV, and Allen Taylor Edge; and seven great-grandchildren: Josie Elizabeth Park, William Huffman Park, Ella Elizabeth Huffman, Joseph Christian Byrd, Krista Rose Byrd, Adyson Grace Byrd, and Alivia Dawn Byrd.
