Milton Russell, age 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Canton, Georgia on March 3, 2019 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He is survived by his wife Rebecca Russell, his daughter Julie Russell Shivers (husband Richard), son Carl Russell (wife Tammy), grandson Franklin Russell, granddaughter Caroline Russell, and brother Robert B. Russell. He enjoyed a close family including sisters-in-law Ruth Christopher (Terry) and Polly Setliff (Lloyd), and numerous nieces and nephews. His 64th wedding anniversary would have been on Saint Patrick's Day.
He grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, attended Ensley High School, Auburn University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His degrees were in industrial management and accounting. At Auburn, he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and was a Distinguished Military Graduate from the Army ROTC unit. He worked in industry and later owned public accounting and real estate firms.
He was a lifelong Methodist and served a number of years as treasurer of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. He served two terms as city councilman of Pleasant Grove, Alabama and served in leadership of civic organizations. He was an artillery officer in the Mississippi and Alabama National Guard. He completed his military service at the rank of Army Captain.
He and his wife Rebecca enjoyed many years of ballroom dancing at Elks Lodge Number 79. He was an excellent backyard football coach, travel baseball fan, gymnastics fan, and he knew good tap, ballet, and jazz steps when he saw them. His kids and grandkids made sure of it.
