Don Lamar Walker, age 64, of Waleska, Georgia, passed away Monday, January 20, 2025, after a twenty-one-month battle with colon cancer.
Don graduated Patterson High School, Patterson, Georgia in 1978. He was an accomplished student serving as Senior Class President, golf team captain, and marching band member. He was named Senior Superlative – Best All Around. He held officer positions in Future Farmers of America.
Upon high school graduation Don attended the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence, Fort Novosel, Alabama. On active duty he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Management from Hawaii Pacific University, graduating with honors.
Don proudly served as a U.S. Army Warrant Officer, Huey Pilot, retiring in 2000 after a twenty-year illustrious military career, that include deployments to Korea, Hawaii, and participation in the Gulf War. He was awarded The Air Medal for Valor during the Gulf War for distinguishing himself on an emergency medevac mission at night, with poor weather conditions, under enemy fire, to pick-up a seriously wounded soldier. Upon retirement Don was awarded The Legion of Merit for his exceptional meritorious service over his distinguished career, marked by devotion to duty, commitment to soldiers, and outstanding professionalism.
Following his military retirement, Don pursued a successful career as a commercial pilot. He served as a regional airline Co-Pilot, a Gulfstream Jet flight instructor, and eventually a Gulfstream Captain for several corporate and private flight departments. He was known for his dedication to his craft and his willingness to share his knowledge with other pilots.
Beyond his professional achievements, Don had a passion for bluegrass music. He enjoyed playing fiddle and participating in jams. He frequently attended music festivals. He found joy in both the music and the camaraderie it fostered.
Don and his beloved wife, Deborah, married in 1992 on a beach in Hawaii. Their daughter, Morgan, born in Hawaii in 1993, brought him much pride. He created cherished memories with his family hiking, beach outings, touring museums and Civil War sights, and enjoying time at the lake.
He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah; daughter, Morgan; sisters Kelly Walker (Allen Nicholls) of Front Royal, Virginia; Suzanne Dasher (Billy Dasher) of Midway, Georgia; as well as niece, Alexis Floyd of Ty Ty, Georgia.
A member of Waleska United Methodist Church, Don's impact on his community will be remembered fondly. Don will be deeply missed and remembered for his unwavering spirit, and dedication to his country.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at Waleska United Methodist Church, with visitation at 10:00 a.m.; service at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Brian Smith; and reception following in the social hall. The internment will take place on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, Georgia, in a private ceremony.
