With deep sorrow the family of Donald Jackson Rainey, Jr. 83 of Ball Ground announce his passing. On August 7, Donald passed peacefully at home surrounded by family after a long struggle with health problems.
Donald was born on September 21, 1939, to Donald Rainey Sr. and Sarah Louise Green Rainey in Ball Ground. After graduating from West Fulton High School in 1957, Donald attended the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Georgia State College. Donald was trained in Computer Programming by IBM, and he began his life work as head of Data Processing for Canton Textile Mills. After the closing of Canton Textile Mills, he became the manager of information technology for Cherokee County Government. He retired from the Cherokee County Government in 2003.
Donald married the love of his life, Sammie Leslie Rainey, in 1961. Together they have loved and raised four children.
Donald was proceeded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife and children- Leslie Shelley (Dave), Harvey Rainey (Rebecca), Todd Rainey (Cecelia), and Annabel Ballew (Steven); eleven grandchildren- Joseph Shelley (Allyson), Katie Goodbar (Ty), Mary Shelley-Snell (Chris), Matthew McDill, Michael Ward, Leigha Rose Rainey, Sarah Thompson (Russell), Blake Rainey, Thomas Ballew (Shannon), Nathan Ballew (Sarah), and Leslie Ballew; nine great-grandchildren- Sam, Davis, Silas, Boone, Huck, Luke, Maggie, Beau, and Wesley; and his siblings- Mary Cobb, Sandra Carder, and Darrell Rainey along with many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 9 at 1:00 at the Darby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. C. R. Hill and Rev. Wallace Wheeles officiating. Visitation will be held at Darby Funeral Home Tuesday, August 8 2:00-8:00 and Wednesday August 9 10:00-12:00. The funeral will be followed by an internment at Sawnee View Gardens in Cumming, Georgia.
