Duane Veloy Johnson, age 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2025, in Cumming, Georgia.
Born on March 29, 1935, in McAdoo, Texas, Duane was the beloved son of Glyn and Ema Lorene (Powers) Johnson. He graduated from McAdoo High School in 1953 and married his high school sweetheart, Johnnie Eldredge, on July 6, 1957, in McAdoo, TX.
A proud patriot, Duane served three years in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. Two of those years were spent in a classified role working with atomic artillery. He was called back to service during the Berlin Crisis in 1961, serving an additional year.
Duane was a man of deep faith and unwavering love for his country. He was known for his sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor, often entertaining friends and family with stories especially about people and his beloved dogs. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he created countless cherished memories with them, from building a playhouse and setting up zip lines into the pool and shoot BB guns.
Duane is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Johnnie Raye Johnson; his son, Ronald Duane Johnson, and wife Kelly of Waleska, Georgia; two grandchildren, Shelby T. Austin and husband Chase of Acworth, Georgia, and Dustin D. Johnson and wife Megan of Austin, Texas; his brother Jerry Johnson and wife Jeannie of Matador, Texas; brothers-in-law Cherry Eldredge of Dallas, Texas, Bub Eldredge and Mary of McAdoo, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Louise Thomason; brothers-in-law and Bobby Thomason and Ronald Eldredge; and sister-in-law Willie Eldredge.
Duane's legacy of love, laughter, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Committal Service will be held at Georgia National Cemetery Canton, GA, Thursday, 7th at 1:00 PM. Family and friend are invited to attend.
