Obituary

Ernest Ray “Ernie” Yarbrough, of Canton, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly at his home on October 17, 2026. Affectionately known to so many as “Coach,” Ernie leaves behind a lasting legacy of faith, family, integrity, and service to others.

Born in 1949 in Alameda, California, Ernie was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He proudly served four years in the United States Navy and remained a devoted veteran throughout his life. Following his military service, he attended the University of San Diego on a football scholarship, beginning a lifelong passion for athletics and coaching.

Ernie dedicated more than 50 years of his life to coaching, including 34 years with the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Respected for his integrity, sportsmanship, and unwavering principles, he believed coaching was about far more than winning games. He devoted himself to developing character, discipline, and respect in the young men and women he mentored. His influence extended well beyond the field and court, leaving a lasting impact on generations of athletes and their families.

A man of deep and abiding faith, Ernie was an active member of Rising Hills Church in Canton. His love for God was evident in his generosity, compassion, and commitment to serving others. He had a special heart for young people and found great purpose in encouraging and guiding those around him.

Above all, Ernie treasured his family. He shared 41 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Cindy, and took great joy in bringing family together and creating cherished memories. He especially adored his grandson, Hampton, whom he lovingly called “Dude.” His devotion to his family was at the heart of everything he did.

Ernie is survived by his loving wife, Cindy; his son, Shawn Schumacher, and daughter-in-law, Joy; his grandson, Hampton; his daughter, Chelsy, and son-in-law, John Clifton; his daughter, Noelle, and son-in-law, Tim Arnzen; his grandchildren, Jonathan, Heather, Matthew, and Ellison; his in-laws, David and Agnes Clement; and numerous extended family members and dear friends.

Ernie will be remembered for his steadfast faith, honorable character, generous spirit, and the countless lives he touched. His legacy will live on through the athletes he mentored, the community he served, and the family he loved beyond measure. Above all, Ernie took great pride in being known simply as “Coach.” It was more than a title to him; it reflected his life's passion, his purpose, and the relationships he built along the way. Whether on the field, on the court, or in everyday life, he was Coach to everyone, and there was no name he loved more. He will be deeply missed, but the lessons he taught, the lives he shaped, and the love he shared will never be forgotten.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
