Obituary

Jackie Monroe Street, of Canton, Georgia, passed away on August 4, 2023. Jack was born in Valdese, NC, on July 2, 1932. He was the son of the late Garmon Monroe Street and Amie Brittain Street. He entered the US Air Force after graduating from Valdese High School and spent time on Okinawa during the Korean conflict. He married Dorothy Rhoney, his high school sweetheart, in December of 1950. After his honorable discharge in 1953, Jack and Dorothy moved back to Valdese. Jack attended Lenoir Rhyne College on the GI bill and later received his first master's degree from Appalachian State University. Jack taught and coached football in Valdese prior to moving his family to Dahlonega, Georgia in 1960 where he became the first football coach for Lumpkin County High School. Coach Street then earned a second master's degree from UGA before moving the family to Toccoa, Georgia in 1965. After six years in Toccoa, Jack coached in Norcross, Georgia before moving to Canton, Georgia to coach and teach at Cherokee High School. He eventually became the Athletic Director at Cherokee before retiring in 1990.

Coach Street was loved by the thousands of students and athletes he had the pleasure of working with over the course of his career. He did his best to encourage and uplift every person he crossed paths with, often engaging in conversations with the most vulnerable students to give them hope. He strived to lead young people to see the benefits of participating in sports and the connection to their spiritual lives.

Coach Street and his wife remained very active in their church, First Baptist of Canton, where they sang in the church choir until they were in their eighties, and each taught their own Sunday School classes. In addition, they taught Bible studies in the Cherokee jails for many years and were active in the Gideons Bible organization.

Coach Street is survived by his wife of 72 years, Dorothy Rhoney Street. He is survived by daughter Jacalyn Leigh Street Wilson of Lizella, GA, daughter Jolynne Street Goosman (Steve) of Gadsden, AL, son David Patrick Street (Elizabeth) of Marietta, GA, and daughter Wendy Street Bryant of Canton, GA. He is pre-deceased by son Robert Monroe Street and great-grandson Gabriel Lowery. He is survived by 9 grandchildren: Rebecca Wilson, Laura Ryles, Patrick Goosman (Heather), Amanda Street Campbell (Andrew), Jim Street (Michelle), Troy Street, Mollie Street, Ashley Bryant, and Justin Bryant. He is survived by 14 great-grandchildren: Jonathan Morris, Adam Morris, Joshua Lowery, Alexander Wilson, Sofia Ryles, Mason Coker, Jackson Goosman, Aubree Goosman, Brooks Campbell, Bennett Campbell, Bozeman Street, Natalie Street, Corbin Bryant, and Lucy Bryant.
