James Hammond Thompson's Obituary

James Hammond Thompson, 85, of Dunwoody, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013. He was born on May 27,1928 in Augusta, GA, the son of the late Dr. Paul F. Thompson and Emmie McKie Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a graduate of the class of 1951 at Davidson College where he ran cross country. He served in the US Air Force and received an honorable discharge in 1962. He recently retired from work as a self-employed home healthcare products salesman. Mr. Thompson loved hiking, tennis, playing bridge, and deep sea fishing. He enjoyed going to the Masters, picking peaches and apples, listening to classical music, keeping in touch with many relatives, and being a loving PopPop to his 3 grandchildren. He was a member of First Baptist Atlanta. His deep abiding faith guided him to be a gentle, kind, generous and compassionate person. Survivors include his wife Linda Hand Thompson; twin daughters Cynthia Thompson of Fayetteville, AR and Christine Cook of Alpharetta; and three grandchildren: Jordan, Amelia, and Erin Cook; and his brother Paul F. Thompson of Fernandina Beach, FL.
A private military burial service for the family will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton with Pastor Keith Reid officiating. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Friday, July 12, 2013, at First Baptist Atlanta, 4400 N. Peachtree Rd. at I-285 in Dunwoody in the Chapel (on the ground floor) with Dr. Scott Downing officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends following the service in Heritage Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to In Touch Ministries, PO Box 7900, Atlanta, GA 30357, or the American Red Cross. Darby Funeral Home of Canton is serving the family of Mr. Thompson.
