It is with profound sadness and infinite love that the family of Rev. Lawrence "Larry" Edward Dettner announce his peaceful passing on 9/6/2023 at the age of 84 years. Larry was born October 2nd, 1938, in New York City, NY to Edward John and Julia Marie, their only child.
Larry graduated from Colgate University before enlisting in the US Army in 1962. Larry spent his early career in insurance sales before being called to the ministry. He pursued and attainted his Master's degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1977, then proudly spent the next 30 years a United Methodist minister in Indiana and Florida conferences.
December 21, 1972, Larry married the absolute love of his life Mary Alice Dettner (1944-2015). Together, they raised and are survived by their daughter: Angela D. (Mull) McDermott, and sons: Eric D. (Stephine) Dettner, and Michael E. (Brian Owens) Dettner. They are also survived by 3 grandsons: Noah Dettner, Dalton Mull, and Tanner Mull, 1 granddaughter: Emelia Dettner, and 1 great granddaughter: Briley Mull.
His life was a living example of one of his favorite Bible verses, Psalm 23:1 "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." Larry was always giving to his family, church, country, and community. He gave selflessly and generously, he was always by your side if you were scared or lost. He never expected anything in return, his servant heart knew that he would be taken care of by the hands of God. He never met a stranger, never forgot a face or a name. And animals…he loved animals! Larry always brought out smiles, and never had a loss of jokes or puns to make you laugh. As hard as it is for those that knew him, now is when he would be smiling and telling us "Let go and let God".
A celebration of Larry's life will be at 3:00 PM Thursday October 5, 2023 at Canton First United Methodist Church. Interment will be 10:00 AM Friday October 6, 2023 in the Georgia National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to his memorial fund at gofund.me/e2e8ad0a and/or the "Larry Dettner Ministry Scholarship" by Canton First United Methodist Church.
