Obituary

Lorraine Shaw Jones, age 89, passed away on April 26, 2017. She was born August 5, 1927 to the late Mary Aileen Hix Putnam and William Shaw.

She is predeceased by her husband, Ben Perry Jones, Sr. After a whirlwind six week courtship, she said "yes", and they were married in 1951, with a union spanning over four decades.

In her younger years, Lorraine was a graceful, lithe model and an obvious contestant in the "Miss Perfect Lips" contest held by the Freshman Co-op at Georgia Tech. In her later years, she was an entrepreneur, starting a direct mail mill end yarn business out of her house, eventually moving to a retail space she named "The Yarn Barn".

She was a very creative artist in numerous mediums, delighting her friends with beautifully crafted gifts and a great sense of humor. This ball of energy was a strong, smart, independent woman up to facing any challenge life threw at her. And she was lobbed a couple of doozies.

Lorraine loved her garden, grandchildren, Jimmy Yarborough paintings, collecting Native American art and artifacts (she was 25% Cherokee), the off beat, Walmart Bourbon chicken, the giant painted concrete chicken in her backyard, cheese straws, laughing, well-manicured hands, and Christmas (she would go all out with child-like wonder). She loved art of all kinds - from Guatemalan textiles to Papua New Guinean fetish figures to Chinese antiques. She never met a stray cat she didn't love.

Lorraine was gracious and accepting of most things that came her way. But two things she despised: left hand turns and her granddaughter's tattoos. She would drive five miles out of her way to avoid that left hand turn and well, nothing left to say about the tattoos.

Sadly, she was predeceased by her two sons, Ben Perry Jones, Jr and Barry Shaw Jones, as well as her daughter-in-law, Janet Jones. She is survived by her daughter, Vaughan Jones Acton from San Rafael, CA; her grandson Jeremiah Jones from Greensboro, NC; her granddaughter Rachel Jones from Greensboro, NC; her sisters, Jackie Jeffreys of Pine Mountain, GA and Beverly Stallworth of Hiawasee, GA; and her ex-daughter-in-law Sabrina Jones of Canton. A special shoutout of thanks to Merrilyn Jones, her niece and caregiver.

A celebration of the life of this delightful woman will be held in June and notice to all will be provided.
