Obituary

Mary Lois Chastain, 85, of Canton, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at Tranquility at Kennesaw Mountain.

Lois held many jobs over the years but found her true joy in being a homemaker, cherishing time spent at home and visiting with family. She had a passion for cooking, loved playing Rook, and enjoyed trips to the beach. Lois was an avid viewer of cooking shows, often trying out new recipes. Not only did her food taste delicious, but the presentation was always perfect.

When her grandsons asked her about the happiest time in her 85 years of life Lois simply said that she was at peace living in her own space, with her son and daughter-in-law, for the last nine years. Lois had a great sense of humor and succinctly stated that she was thankful she did not have to live somewhere that made you paint pictures of birds' beaks or make dusting cloths from coffee filters. She said she loved her life and seeing her precious son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. What mattered most to her was her family, and the everyday moments, like seeing her son mow the grass or having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren drop by to visit.

Lois loved her family, and they were the center of her life. We will miss this love, but will carry her memory in our hearts, including her wonderful sense of humor, kindness, and the joy she brought to all of us.

Lois was preceded in death by her son, who died at birth, Steven Wheeler Pettett, and her parents Haden and Reba Mulkey.

She is survived by her son, David (Wendy) Pettett of Canton, Georgia; brother, Lawrence (Jane) Mulkey of Alpharetta, Georgia; grandchildren, Christopher Brandon (Ashley) Pettett of Holly Springs, Georgia, Brett Justin (Lacie) Pettett of Rogersville, Missouri; and great-grandchildren, Iris Anne Pettett, Jasper Isaiah Pettett, Brody Luke Pettett, Colton Eli Pettett, Asher Jace Pettett, and Elliot Grace Pettett.

The family will receive friends at Darby Funeral Home on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The funeral will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Darby Funeral Home with Rev. Darrell Bailey officiating. Interment will be at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Jasper, Georgia.
