May 16, 1937 – May 17, 2026
Mary Madeline Lamazares, age 89 of Canton, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at The Landings of Canton Hills.
Born Mary Madeline Gogarty on May 16, 1937, in Clogherhead, Ireland, north of Dublin along the east coast, Mary was the daughter of the late John and Mary Frances Gogarty. Affectionately known as “Olive” by those who loved her, she carried a warm spirit, kind heart, and unwavering devotion to her family throughout her life.
Olive met the love of her life, David Lamazares, in New York at the Shamrock Dance Hall in 1959. Their love story blossomed quickly, and they were united in marriage in 1962, beginning a beautiful journey together that spanned more than six decades.
Above all else, Olive cherished her family. She lived for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, finding her greatest joy in the time spent with them. Her legacy is one of love, devotion, and family, and the memories she created will be treasured for generations to come.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings, Ita Gogarty, Michael Gogarty, and Jim Gogarty.
She is survived by her loving husband, David Lamazares of Canton, Georgia; son, Carl (Denise) Lamazares of Canton, Georgia; daughter, Linda (Chris) Bennett of Jasper, Georgia; grandchildren, Alex (Ashleigh) Hartman, Kylie (Peyton) Cain, Tara Hartman, Taylor Lamazares, Ryan Lamazares, and Lexie Hartman; great-grandchildren, Claire Cain, Chase Hartman, Ella Hartman, and a great-grandson expected soon, Baby Boy Cain; brother, Sean (Edna) Gogarty of London, England; sister, Joan McCarthy of London, England; as well as several extended family members, and many dear friends.
A private graveside service to honor and celebrate Olive’s life will be held at Georgia National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made in Mrs. Lamazares' memory to Alzheimer's Association - Georgia Chapter.
The caring staff of Darby Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Mary Madeline Lamazares.
