Orman Buster "O.B" Deere, Jr. of Ball Ground, GA passed on to his eternal reward on April 14, 2019 after several months of declining health. O.B. was born on April 20, 1932 in Dallas, Texas to Anne C. and Orman B. Deere, Sr., who worked as a mechanic for Delta Air Lines. The Deere family moved to Georgia as Delta moved its headquarters and maintenance facilities to Atlanta. One of O.B.'s favorite childhood memories was the story of the trip to Georgia during those depression years with the family's milk goat strapped to the running board of their car. While growing up near the Atlanta airport, and with his father's connection to Delta Air Lines, O.B. developed a fascination and love of airplanes which he maintained throughout his life. It was this passion for aircraft that eventually led to his career of over 37 years in the Metallurgical and Failure Analysis Department at the Lockheed plant in Marietta, GA.
O.B. loved to work in his garden, and for several years he and his brother Warren maintained a vineyard on their family farm in Fayette County. He always seemed to have exceptionally good luck at transplanting flowers, shrubs, and trees, and with each move to a new home, he would take along his favorite plants to make the move with him. When walking around his home, he enjoyed telling visitors where each plant came from.
On April 22, 1990, O.B. married Dianne Voiles Klein in an elaborate ceremony at the Tate House in Tate, Georgia. He and Dianne would live in Canton, Georgia. Later they would build a beautiful home in Ball Ground, Georgia which would become the center of family gatherings. O.B. took on the roll of father, Papa, and Great-Papa with the same vigor with which he attended the other aspects of his life. He loved everyone in his family and treated all equally, showing no favoritism.
O.B. was a kind and gentle man who would help anyone in need if he could. Family, friends, and even strangers were frequently the beneficiaries of O.B.'s giving nature. O.B. was a man of faith who set a fine Christian example that many would do well to emulate.
O.B. was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Charles E. Deere, infant, and Warren Tilson of Jasper. He is survived by his wife, Dianne Deere of Ball Ground; his son, Todd (Kelli) Klein of Jasper; granddaughters, Dana Harris, Natalie Klein, and Paige Klein, all of Jasper; brother, Walter (Joanna) Deere of Lilburn; sister-in-law Gail (David) Stone of Colbert; nephew, Jeff (Desiree) Deere of Cartersville; niece, Lauren (Joe) Peterka of Lawrenceville; niece, Alice (Jeremy) Collins of Johns Creek; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Addie Harris of Jasper; and great-nephews and nieces, Lawson and Nolan Burtt of Lawrenceville , Rose and Grace Collins of Johns Creek.
Visitation will be held at Darby Funeral Home in Canton, GA on Tuesday, April 16 from 11 to 8 and Wednesday, April 17 from 11 to 2. The funeral service will be in the Darby Funeral Home Chapel at 2 PM on Wednesday, April 17. Interment will follow at Cherokee Memorial Park in Canton, GA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in O.B.'s memory to the National Stroke Association (stroke.org), the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (michaeljfox.org), or the American Cancer Society (cancer.org).
