Phillip Courtney Tyson, age 74, of Canton, GA passed away at his home June 8, 2021. The family will receive friends at Darby Funeral Home, Canton, GA on Sunday, June 27 from 4 to 7 PM. The funeral will be held on Monday, June 28 at 11am at Darby Funeral Home with the Reverend Chris Collett officiating. Interment will follow at Georgia National Cemetery at 1pm with military honors.
Phillip was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Hubert Tyson, Tifton, GA. Phillip is survived by his wife; Marcia Tyson, Canton, GA, his mother Dorothy Pike Tyson, Tifton, GA, brothers Michael Tyson, Sr (Janis), Marietta, GA and John Tyson (Debi), Tifton, GA; sisters Lenora Nash (Fenton), Albany, GA, Donna Clements, Clayton, GA, and Patricia Kelly, Clayton, GA.
Phillip was born in Manchester, GA May 7, 1947. He was raised in Tifton, GA and was a graduate of Tift County High School. He enlisted in the US Army in 1968. His service included one year in Viet Nam where he was awarded many medals. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he attended Atlanta Metro Area Technical School where he was awarded an Associate Degree in Communications Technology.
In 1974 he married Marcia Kay Niehaus, Mt Vernon, IN. In 1990 Phillip founded TYTEL Communications Inc which was to be a very successful company. Due to his failing health, he retired in 2019.
Phillip was a member of the Georgia Chapter of the Viet Nam Veterans Alliance. He enjoyed participating in all their social functions, especially Camp LZ Friendly. He would remember going to LZ Friendly but couldn't remember getting home or whether he had a good time or not.
In retirement Phillip became an avid mechanic rebuilding and repairing small engines. The love of his life other than Marcia was his red 2001 Supercharged Ford Lightning. Phillip will always be remembered for his sense of humor and unique personality. Phillip's nieces and nephews knew him as that crazy uncle they all wanted to visit. He will be greatly missed by everyone.
