Canton, GA- Richard Hardin Johnson, Jr. 72 of Canton, died Friday, May 17th at his residence after a long fought battle with cancer.
Funeral Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday May 25 at Darby Funeral Home, 480 East Main Street, Canton, GA. The family will receive visitors prior to the service at 3:00 p.m.
Mr. Johnson was born on May 9, 1952 in Birmingham, AL, son of the late Dr. Richard H. Johnson and Elizabeth Sampsell Johnson. He then moved to Atlanta, GA and attended Sandy Springs public schools and graduated from Sandy Springs High School in 1970. He graduated from Mercer University, Macon GA with a degree in Political Science in 1974 and married Becky Brinson on October 5, 1974.
Mr. Johnson worked in the consumer goods industry with Proctor and Gamble, Athens, GA; Pepsi Cola Company, Jacksonville, FL; and Nestle Waters, Perrier and Vittel, Grosse Pointe, MI.
Mr. Johnson enjoyed a love of tennis for 40 years. In his later years he made the switch to Pickleball. He became a certified Pickleball instructor and taught and played at various locations in the Atlanta metro area.
Survivors include his wife, Becky Brinson Johnson; daughter Emily J. Pennekamp and her husband Timothy J. Pennekamp of Farragut, TN and son Bradley C. Johnson and his wife Ashley C. Johnson of Olney, MD; sisters Susan Sutterfield of Sandy Springs, GA, Leigh Steed of Cleveland, GA, Nancy Thomas of Sandy Springs, GA and brother David Johnson of Norcross, GA. Mr. Johnson is also survived by his Grandchildren Andrew James Pennekamp, Sophie Elizabeth Pennekamp, Ellery Wallis Johnson and McKinley Grace Johnson.
