Obituary

Robert "Bob" Leonard Moore, 90 of Canton, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at Ridge Manor in Canton.

Robert (Bob) Leonard Moore was born April 11, 1933 in Lindale, GA as the youngest of four sons. He later had a younger sister but tragically, she died in a childhood accident. Bob lived in Atlanta with his uncle and cousin as a young boy while his mom lived in Canton and took care of her mom. At 10 years old, he would sneak on the train by himself and smile at the conductor pretending he had a ticket so he could ride from Atlanta to Canton to see his mom and grandma on weekends.

Without too much supervision from his uncle, he quit school in the 6th grade, but what he lacked in education, he made up for in ambition. He got a job as a pinsetter at the bowling alley when he was 12 years old and even organized a successful strike and got the Jones's to restore the 3 cents per pin rate after they tried to cut wages to a penny per pin!

In his early 20s, Bob managed a gas station overnight on Boulevard around Decatur, flew single engine airplanes as a hobby and had some wild characters that he called friends that provided an endless supply of crazy stories he would later tell his friends and family. Despite having a 6th grade education, he once taught a class at GA Tech and went on to be successful in a variety of businesses.

In his late 20s, Bob started working at Cotton Mill #1 in Canton, GA as a floor sweeper, but he had his eye on a different job. He watched and learned and befriended the weavers and loom fixers, and it wasn't long before he was the head loom fixer. He met his wife, Ruby Louise, who was a weaver and they were married in 1966. Their only child and the light of their life, Robert, was born in 1968. They were married 45 years when Ruby passed away in 2012.

After the Cotton Mill closed down, he got into the restaurant business working at and managing both the Happy Kitchen and the Burger Chief for Canton doctors, Dr Nichols and Dr Sword. He was especially known at the Burger Chief for the broasted potatoes and chili dogs and don't tell Chick-fil-a, but he always claimed he made a better chicken sandwich! Though he eventually got out of the restaurant business, there was a part of him that never truly gave it up. The day he died he still had a deep fryer in his basement in case he ever wanted to open a fast food restaurant, and for the last few months he's been looking for land for sale while riding in the car and planning a good spot for Robert, Amanda (daughter-in-law) and himself to open a hot dog stand.

His next career took him into the cabinet business where he started out working for Johnny Manous at Manous Cabinets. He later opened his own cabinet shop and, at one time, was a partner in three different shops. He continued in the cabinet business until retiring around age 76 to take care of his wife Louise who had dementia.

Always looking to be productive, in his late 50s and early 60s (in addition to his main job) Bob spent several years delivering pizzas for Domino's as a hobby. The other employees called his son Robert "The Machine" because he was so fast….Bob was "The Machine 2", and one of his favorite pastimes was racing Robert to see who could deliver the most pizzas in a night.

For the past 25-30 years, he has called Burger King his "office" and could be found there most every morning from 6 am to 8 am drinking coffee with his buddies. You could always spot him in his straw hat. He had a stash of them from the dollar store and was known for painting them blue to keep the bugs away while he was cutting grass. At 90 years old, he outlasted many in his Burger King group.

Bob became a Christian early in his life and was a pillar of Sunnyside Church of God (now Full Life Church in Woodstock). He was one of the leaders throughout the church's formative years and served close to two decades as the clerk. He also spent several years driving the church van to make sure kids had a chance to get to Sunday School and hear about God. Bob had a kind, gentle and giving spirit and was always willing to lend his money, his time and his possessions to those in need. For the past few years, he even helped wipe tables in the morning at Burger King and would collect buggies whenever he went to Ollie's.

Up until May of this year, Bob was still living alone, driving and cutting his grass uphill with a push mower. Not bad for 90! And for all his accomplishments and adventures in his 90 years, what he valued most was his family. He was always interested in their activities and accomplishments and told everyone who would listen how proud he was. The last five and a half months have been rough, and as his family, we are happy to know his body has been restored and he's holding Louise's hand at the side of Jesus, but at the same time, the world has lost one of the kindest individuals around, and he will be missed greatly!
