Obituary

Robert Leslie Mason Sr. went home to be with the Lord, Friday March 1, 2024. He passed peacefully surrounded by his beloved wife of 43 years, two daughters and two caregivers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Estelle Mason; brother, Donald Mason; and daughter, Leslie Mason Hurst (Will Hurst). He is survived by his wife PatricIa Henry Mason; children, Robert Mason Jr. (Jennifer), Larissa Brock (Eric), Libby Lantz ( Dave); grandchildren: Tyler, Walker and Jack Hurst; Logan and Dylan Lantz; and Lillian and Finn Brock.

Robert was born in Las Vegas Nevada in 1932 but shortly after moved to Lansdale, Pennsylvania where he graduated high school with letters in football and baseball. In his spare time, he flew crop dusters and developed a love for flying. He earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Southern California. He continued to follow his passion and enlisted in the Air Force. He inter service transferred to the Army to maximize his flying opportunities. He served his country in Korea and Vietnam flying several fixed wing aircrafts as well as Hueys and Cobras with many hours serving M*A*S*H units. He had an exemplary Army career, retiring as a Brigadier General. Simultaneously he was a captain for Eastern Airlines and ultimately retired from the FAA.

Robert was a devoted Christian, husband, father and friend. He was actively involved in his church, often singing in the choir. He was active in the North Georgia walk to Emmaus where he served as Lay Director on Men's Walk 56 in 1997 and participated in Kairos prison ministry. In his spare time, he enjoyed golf, traveling and his furry friends. He could not pass up a stray dog or cat.

Robert's 92 years reflect a life well lived and were an inspiration to family and others. He was a true American hero. The family is forever grateful to Adrian Butts whose love and devotion allowed Robert to live at home during the final years of his life. The family would also like to thank Bonnie Kelley for her love and support along the journey.

Interment will be at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton Georgia. A celebration of life will be hosted by the family at Trinity Church in Marble Hill Georgia in April 2024. Date and time to be posted on the Darby Funeral Home Website.
