Ron (70) passed away unexpectedly of cancer on July 22, 2024. For those of us who knew him, he was the larger than life, friend to all – husband, father, patriot, public protector, veteran and caretaker. Also known for having the best hugs and loudest laugh.
Ron was born in Jeffersontown, KY where he attended school, graduating with the class of 1974 as a scholar and football star; known best to his class as Ronnie.
After high school, Ron enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his country for 34 years retiring with the rank of Chief; an honor held near and dear to his heart for the rest of his life. Also while in the Navy, he met the love of his life, Joanna who he married in 1978.
Ron then attended Kennesaw State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1987. Ron joined the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department, followed by the Cobb County Police Department where he retired after a 40 year career, including the Retired Officer's Program.
In the spirit of honoring his country's fallen heroes, he was an avid member of the Georgia Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) where he was committed to serving those who risked their lives for our country every day, serving in several roles such as Assistant State Captain, State Mission Controller, Ride Captain, and Mentor.
Predeceased by his parents, Oscar Earl Underwood and Hilda Lee Tinnell, Ron's memory will be forever held in the hearts of his surviving family: Joanna, his loving wife of 46 years; his children, Ron (Meghan) and Alison (Ben); his four grandchildren: Kerry (17), Ron (14), Ellie (14), Bailey (11); his sister Marlene Bowier, brother Walter Underwood; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family including a tight bond with his military, law enforcement and PGR rider brotherhood.
Visitation is scheduled on July 31, 2024 from 11:30a until 1p, followed by a chapel service at 1p at the Darby Funeral Home at 480 E Main St, Canton, GA 30114. He will then be laid to rest at the Georgia National Cemetery at 1080 Scott Hudgens Dr, Canton, GA 30114 at 3p.
In a fitting tribute to a man who loved the Patriot Guard Riders and its mission and members, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Patriot Guard Riders of GA (
