Obituary

Sally Broadrick was born on December 25, 1943, in Dalton, Georgia to Columbus Newton Broadrick and Anne Mae Machan. She was the oldest of three girls, and the second child following her brother. She died in the evening of June 19th at Northside Cherokee Hospital following an extended illness. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Joe P. Williams of Canton, her sons, Andrew Williams of Marietta, and Michael Williams and his wife Elizabeth Williams of Canton. She also leaves behind three grandchildren, James, Ellie, and Kathryn, her younger sister, Kathryn Costin, of Warsaw, North Carolina, as well as eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Gary Broadrick and sister, Nancy Posick. She was a member of Hickory Flat UMC, active in the life of the church until her health prevented it.

Sally was a nurse, graduating from Grady Memorial Hospital in 1969. She was passionate about her patients and a fiery advocate for their care; often putting her at odds with doctors and administrators. She became an infection control nurse in 1970, after federal regulations began to require medical facilities to have infection control and prevention protocols. She was trained by the CDC for that position and spent the rest of her nursing career as a tireless advocate relentlessly insisting that medical facilities did not spread infections by neglecting simple things such as washing hands and properly wearing masks. She was instrumental in forming the Georgia Infection Prevention Network (GIPN) to teach other nurses how to implement those procedures and to also act as a network of peers who could call on each other for advice and support. The organization includes nurses, doctors, EMTs, among other healthcare professionals. The GIPN presents the sally B. Williams Award each year to a member who has gone above and beyond to promote infection prevention and control.

Sally requested that she be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
