Sandra May White, age 84 of Newnan, GA went home to her Lord on Monday 20 March 2023. She passed peacefully surrounded by family. She was well known as an active and passionate person whose social commitments were both deep and wide to the benefit of all of her family and her many friends.
She is preceded by her husband, Edward White and is survived by son Randy and daughter-in-law Deborah Kaye White of White GA, son Mark and daughter-in-law Sharon Anderson White of Mineral VA, 7 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Gary May and his wife Regina May of Newnan, their children and grandchildren.
Sandra was born in Atlanta, GA in May 1938 to Eldridge H. and Evelyn P. May. At Sylvan High School, she was a star majorette. She modelled for the Patricia Stevens Agency for several years and was deeply involved as spokesperson and leader with the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign in Atlanta. She attended school at Georgia State University, graduating with her degree in psychology. She was a loyal member of Delta Zeta sorority Delta Delta chapter and involved in the Epsilon Nu chapter at Southwest Missouri State College.
She was introduced to Ed White in 1962 by his brother, Charles, who was the high school basketball coach for her brother Gary. They married in Atlanta in June 1962. She worked as a manager and executive in May & Co. and went on to own and operate her own business for the final 15 years of her working career. Sandra was an avid entertainer and lifetime bridge player, and she and Ed enjoyed a large group of friends square dancing and traveling around Georgia, the US, and the world.
The family will host visitation at Darby Funeral Home in Canton GA from 2:00-4:00 on Sunday 2 April 2023. That will be followed by a 4:00 memorial service officiated by several of her grandchildren. She will be interred in a ceremony at Georgia National Cemetery at 10:00 on Monday 3 April 2023. Honorary pallbearers are grandsons Alexander White of Virginia, Nicholas White of North Carolina, Ian White of Oklahoma, and grandsons-in-law Jason Coleman of Acworth, Jesse Griffin of Acworth, and Ryan Lisk of Rowlett, TX. Donations in her honor are welcomed in lieu of flowers. Gifts can be made by check to "Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church". Please note in the memo, "In honor of Sandra M. White: attention the Honorable Denney Rogers". The address is PO Box 332 Roopville, GA 30170. The church was built in 1867 by her husband's great-grandfather James A. Denney, and funds are used to maintain and continue the historic church and cemetery, which still holds Sacred Harp singing and dinner on the grounds the third Sunday in June, annually.
