VIRGIL THOMAS GREENE, 68 years of age of Grundy, VA, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2015 at his home following a long illness. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by loving family and friends. Born on June 20, 1946, in Buffington, GA, he was the son of the late Jay Wesley Greene and Ina Ingram Greene. A 1964 graduate of Cherokee High School in Canton, GA, Virgil went on to earn a degree in mining engineering from the University of Alabama in 1969. This degree led him to Buchanan County where he was employed by Island Creek Coal Company and later, Consolidated Coal Corporation. After 32 years in mining, Virgil retired in 2002.

Virgil loved his family, the "Crimson Tide" football team, the Atlanta Braves, gardening and working in his yard. In recent years, his favorite thing to do was to help babysit Molly, Max and Carlye.

Virgil was preceded in death by his precious parents and by three brothers: Walter Allen Greene, Melvin Jay Greene and Austin Amos Greene.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Ivy Cline Greene; his sister: Martha Pearl (Bobby) Segers; his brother: Bobby Linford (Telete) Greene; his sister-in-law: Martha Greene; his brother-in-law: Jessie (Carolyn) Cline and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation and funeral services for VIRGIL THOMAS GREENE will be held at Vansant Baptist Church, 1471 Lovers Gap Road, Vansant, VA. Visitation will begin at 6:00 P.M. Monday, June 15, followed by a service conducted by Dr. Stan Parris at 7:00 P.M. The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, with Dr. Casey Stark officiating. Visitation in Canton, GA will be held at the Darby Funeral Home, 480 East Main Street, Canton, GA on Wednesday, June 17, after 5:00 P.M. Graveside rites and burial will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, June 18, at the Harmony Cemetery, Canton, GA.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Danny Blankenship, David Tolliver, Danny Wade, Paul Greene, Jeff Greene, Russell Segers, Sam Wheeler and Jason Cline. Honorary pallbearers include Gene Sutherland, Jim Childress, Scotty Owens, Dr. Clint Sutherland and Deacons of the Vansant Baptist Church.

The family wishes to thank the nurses from Buchanan General Health Care: Tracy Rowlett, Beth Matney and Denise Honaker; and the nurses at Wellmont Infusion Center, Bristol, TN.
