Mazie Johnson age 90 of Canton, GA passed away Friday October 14, 2016. Funeral Services are scheduled for 11:00AM Monday October 17, 2016 from the Chapel of Darby Funeral Home with interment following in the Macedonia Memorial Park. Reverend Charles Davis, Reverend Floyd Tenney and Dr. George Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be held Sunday October 16, 2016 from 2:00PM- 4:00PM at Darby Funeral Home.
Willie Mae "Mazie" Johnson was born July 4, 1926 to James Abron Harbin and Ida Epperson Harbin of Woodstock, GA. She has been known as Mazie since the eighth grade when June Pruitt (Delay) started that name. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton, GA since she was 16 years old. Mazie graduated from Canton High School in 1944 and worked in the Bell Bomber Plant for 2 1/2 years then worked in the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office as a secretary for 14 1/2 years. She then worked for 2 1/2 years at Canton Motor Sales. She was the first woman to be elected to office in Cherokee County. In 1967 she ran for Ordinary against 7 candidates that qualified for the office and only needed 44 votes to keep from having a runoff election with Ernest Stone.
She has been elected Ordinary/Probate Judge 1967 -1997 serving under 5 Governors, Lester Maddox, Jimmy Carter, George Busbee, Joe Frank Harris and Zell Miller.
Mazie is survived by her great niece Anita Wages, Winder, GA, great great nephew; Devin Crowe, Winder, GA, great great niece; Haley (Ben) Fausett, Winder, GA, great great great nephews; Duncan Fausett, Eion Fausett, Jesse Fausett and Daniel Fausett all of Winder, GA.
